(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A top Iranian religious figure says Zionists and the United States advocate the idea of “Islam minus the clergy” and use the notion to their own advantage.

“The anti-Islam movement which believes in Islam minus the clergy has always been supported by global Zionism and the US, and has always used the idea (to serve its interests),” Ayatollah Qorbanali Dorri Najafabadi, a member of the Assembly of Experts, was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying.

The top cleric then touched upon the root causes of the propagation of Islam without the presence of the clergy and “Islam minus politics,” adding that a broad range of anti-Islamic groups, from far-left radicals to westernized seculars, have tried to spread such thought throughout history.

According to Ayatollah Dorri Najafabadi, “Islam without the clergy” is the kind of Islam favored by the White House and Zionists.

However, he added, Iranians from all walks of life have always sympathized with real and pure Islam.

The senior cleric pointed out that a clear example of anti-Islamic elements is the expatriates who have interviews with foreign radio and TV networks against the Islamic establishment of Iran.

These individuals have revealed their true colors and anti-Islam nature in the interviews they have had with foreign media since last year's Iranian presidential election, he added.

“They are set to diminish the role of Islam in society and weaken the clergy's role in the political arena,” he concluded.
